SOUTH AFRICA AND TANZANIA TO INTRODUCE VAR IN DOMESTIC LEAGUES

In a step towards aligning with global standards, both the South African League and the Tanzania Premier League have announced the implementation of Video Assistant Refereeing (VAR), marking a significant milestone in African football.
South Africa confirmed that VAR will be officially introduced into its domestic league starting next season. League officials believe the move will reduce officiating errors, improve match outcomes, and boost the league’s international credibility.
Meanwhile, East Africa’s Tanzania is making its own stride. The Tanzania Premier League is set to roll out VAR across key matches, especially in high-stakes fixtures and title-deciding games. The Tanzanian Football Federation has collaborated with international experts to train referees and ensure a smooth integration of the technology. This development reflects Tanzania’s growing football ambitions, both regionally and continentally.
The growing adoption of VAR across Africa echoes a trail first blazed by Morocco. In 2019, the North African nation became the first on the continent to implement VAR in its domestic league, setting a precedent for others to follow. Egypt soon followed in 2020, incorporating VAR into its Premier League and significantly improving the standard of officiating in domestic competitions.
As more African leagues move towards incorporating VAR, the trend signifies more than just a technical upgrade. It represents a commitment to transparency, fair play, and modernization—values that are crucial for the growth and global recognition of African football. With South Africa and Tanzania now joining the fold, the continent edges closer to a future where technology and tradition blend seamlessly on the pitch.
